A Municipal Service District (MSD) was established downtown in 1981 in accordance with state law. Owners of property located within the MSD pay an additional $.18 per $100 value on property taxes. Revenue generated from the MSD tax is used within the MSD boundaries by Wilson Downtown Development Corporation for special events, marketing, redevelopment incentives and programs to realize the vision of a vibrant downtown.

Whether a business or project is relocating to an existing building or is new construction, businesses should thoroughly investigate what actions will be necessary prior to opening a business. Due diligence is encouraged, especially before signing a lease or purchasing property. Business owners and their representatives are encouraged to schedule a predevelopment meeting to determine what is required for each project. Predevelopment meetings are scheduled by calling the Downtown Business Specialist, Aramith Trimiar, at 252-299-4776 or emailing atrimiar@wilsonnc.org. The project address, proposed use, and contact information are necessary in order to schedule a predevelopment meeting.
